Daily Devotions Day 2 - Change

Today we'll be praying on how we face change...

Can I REALLY Change?

This devotion was taken in no small part from a book that I was reading by Craig Groeschel called “Divine Direction”.  I have to give credit where credit is due. Here’s the quote that I read in the devotional:

“What are you doing that’s not good for you?  What do you need to stop so that you can tell the story that God wants you to tell?  What’s the next decision you need to make to change the direction of your life? What is it that you need to stop so that you can move forward in the story you want to live?  Pick one thing you know you need to stop doing in order to change your story’s direction. Write it down on a piece of paper.”

I really like this series of questions and the meaning behind them all.  The basic premise is that so many of us, especially around January, make these crazy new year’s resolutions that we’ll never be able to keep past the first week.  Craig’s idea is to take one thing, not five, not ten but one and work on that one thing so that you can stay focused on it and claim the win. Maybe it’s only one thing in one year.  One thing per year that you change. The point is we need to make changes.

What’s your one thing?

Read the Bible more?
Spend more time with family?
Work less, have more free time?
Fill in your one thing here:

Reflect...

I can’t make the decision for you…..but you can.  Today. Now. Grab a piece of paper. A real piece of paper made from a tree and then grab a pen.  Something that you can actually write with. Not a note in your phone, not a draft of an email. Take a pen or a pencil and a piece of paper and write down one thing that you’re going to change.  Then...put it on your night stand. Hang it on your bathroom mirror. Put it on the dash of your car. Just put it somewhere where you can see it, be reminded of it and actually pray about it. Because, it’s not going to happen unless you start praying about it.  God needs to be in the equation.  If it’s too much for you, get help.  Talk to your pastor, get an accountability partner.  The point is, make the change.

There are so many things that take us away from, really far away from, who God wants us to be.  We are creatures of habit and we don’t like change.

Let’s fight the temptation to stay in the norm and let’s become a community of believers who change and help others change.

Today.  Let’s change together.

Once you've had some time to reflect on your one thing drop a comment below and we'll pray for you!

P.S. If part of change for you is putting a devotional practice into your daily life, that's what I'm here to help with! If there's something on your heart and you'd like a personal handwritten devotional from me, I'd love to help. To find out more, just click here.

  6. Suzanne on February 26, 2020 at 5:13 pm

This year I picked a word to be my focus, I chose “aware” I often miss the moment, I will then think about it later (we are going for honesty right? I don’t “think” I “obsess” which leads to regret, condemnation, and other things unpleasant) So I am working on being aware in the moment…is this where I should be, should I be doing this…saying this…thinking this…am I aware of Christ in this moment?

    • Dave Pettigrew on March 6, 2020 at 4:29 pm

Suzanne. Prayers up for focus! Thanks for sharing. God works in ways that we just don’t understand sometimes. Being aware is a great way to focus in on Him.

  8. Norma on February 28, 2020 at 3:00 am

I really need to remember as a little poem I used to carry that yesterday is gone and I can’t change it, Tomorrow is yet to come thus not promised. These are Gods Days. Thus, I’m left with today and with Gods help I can carry whatever today may bring.
That’s not exactly how it went but that’s the idea. I need to trust Gods days to him and thank him more for each today.

    • Dave Pettigrew on March 6, 2020 at 4:30 pm

Norma. thanks for the comment. Prayers up for you. Prayers for trust and faith each day.

I need to change the way I treat people. I am judgemental and critical towards those I don’t know my negative attitude is causing me much shame. It is written ” judge not ” yet I do . I know everyone is special in God’s heart and I want to have the mind of Christ. I’m also living Romans 7 v14-25. . ✝️

  16. Alistair Clarke on March 8, 2020 at 3:32 pm

Hi dave. Not sure where my comment yesterday went. So I will repeat it again today. I need prayer for direction for my life. I moved in a sheltered apartment here in a town in South Wales UK about a month ago. I am still not sorted out here and that is worrying me. As well I have had problems with my left foot and until recently it was affecting my driving. I work as a volunteer for Care for the Family a Christian charity In their head office usually in the Warehouse. I was not sure when i started there last year if i had the talent to do my job. However the LORD revealed to me that HE has equipped me with what i need. I love being there serving the LORD. When i receive praise for my efforts, i just say I give the Glory to the LORD. But because i have moved and had health problems i have not yet been able to resume being back there since December last year. I am thinking I need to sort myself out here before I return. However I need guidance from the LORD as when to return.

    • Dave Pettigrew on March 8, 2020 at 7:29 pm

Alistair, Thanks for the note. Prayers up for all of this. Prayers that God would reveal His plan and direction to you. All the best!

    • Dave Pettigrew on March 27, 2020 at 2:33 pm

June, thanks for the comment. Yes, this is something that a lot of folks need to do. Our trust in God is the starting place in our own thoughts desires for our future. He’ll lead the way, He promises that in His word. Thanks!

  18. Marie Brooks on March 28, 2020 at 4:29 pm

I need to become stronger and share my faith. When with non Christians my tongue becomes tongue tied. I just sit there and listen to what they say and I don’t say a thing. I want to be able to share my faith with an openness that they can see the love of Jesus in me.

    • Dave Pettigrew on April 6, 2020 at 12:55 am

Marie, thanks for the note. Prayers up for boldness for sharing your faith with others. Appreciate you sharing.

Dave, I cannot begin to tell you how relevant this is to me. I know I’m in a season of change. God has been extravagant in His presence and Blessings. He is about to do something new in my life which is exciting. On our walk we passed deer, and the song “s the deer pants for the water” also very relevant at this time. The only thing I can change at this time is to cease smoking. My mission is ‘ To make more room for Holy Spirit. Thank you so much, your song is not so much a challenge as a confirmation. I’ll follow wherever He leads me I just wait upon His word. Thank you again, I’m so glad I signed up for this. Be Blessed
