Daily Devotions Day 5 - Serve

We are Servants of The Gospel

How Do I Serve in the Kingdom?

“I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power. Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.” - Ephesians‬ ‭3:7-9

A servant of the Gospel. I love that. We are called over and over again to be servants. To serve as Jesus served. To love as Jesus loves. To live as Jesus lives.

We are given this by the grace of God. This gift from Him. Free to us all. Absolutely amazing.

His riches are endless.

His mercy is endless.

His grace is endless.

His love is endless.

His hope is endless.

Today. Think on servanthood. Think on how to serve others and lift up the name of Jesus in your own life so that you can be an example of His life, love, hope and mercy.  His grace, His kindness, His compassion.

Reflect...

Take a moment to stop.  Think about how to serve.  Slow down for a minute and think on how to serve your wife, your husband, your kids.  Maybe it’s a family outing to a homeless shelter. Maybe it’s serving on a team at church.  All of these acts of serving and kindness do nothing but draw us closer to Jesus and instill in us the kindness and compassion He teaches us and shows us daily.

Today.  Think on all of this and act.  To God be all the glory today.

Can you share your plan for even a small act of service in the comments?

Let's all pray and encourage each other to commit to loving service.

As we walk together through the 5th day of this devotional journey, I wanted to find a way to help you take this home with you. Taking an experience of community, worship, and devotion to friends and family can be tough.

But, in service, we are called to do exactly THAT!

If you're looking for a way to share this journey of faith with others or just make prayer like this a regular practice, I'd like to help and have an idea, click here to check it out.

Worship with Music...

Speaking of service...this song says it all.

When we love others and serve them, we are literally being Christ to those people.

We are a reflection of Him.

Pray that you and I always will be a reflection of God's love!

When we choose to live our lives as Gods words it brings such inner peace. I feel Gods presence when I work with Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients. He guides my thoughts and makes my path clear with my work, my family, and the people I love🙏🏻🌸

I am trying to be in example to our kids, our kids are all grown up now we have 5 kids, as young children we took them to church and Sunday school all the time as long as we could get them to come, we tried our best to raise them right, and some of them accepted Jesus as Savior as young kids but now that they’re adults none of them are living for the Lord, I am very concerned for their souls.. please pray for them… and for us as parents for wisdom!

I love to serve the Lord in his house. There are many ways we can do that especially in a big church. Myself I serve in teas and coffees in the Eve once a month. Also Foodbank which is a ministry which is continuously growing because of the needs of people. But we can serve within the family of God just by supportjng people by spending time with needy christians. Sometimes just a phone call will make a huge difference for someone. Also do we realise there are acts of service that when we are obedient we are serving Jesus himself. That is an amazing thought.

I try very hard, but some days I fall so short and I get angry with myself and tell myself that I am not worthy enough to be one of God’s servants, I can’t even serve myself.

I’ve felt the call to start Celebrate Recovery at my church for a long time. Finally God gave me the sign that the time is now. We’re just in the early stages of getting started, but seeing people come together to share and heal from their hurts, hang-ups and habits has already been amazing! This program saved my life in so many ways and being blessed to be called to bring this program to others is such a humbling honor.

    • Dave Pettigrew on March 5, 2020 at 6:14 pm

Jeannie, thanks so much for starting the group. Please let me know where it will be located. We are starting to work with CR groups by leading worship at the meetings. Maybe we can come out and lead worship at yours!

I’ve seen your concerts twice in the past year, and I’m really hoping that I might be well enough to come at the end of next month. It’s been a very trying past month, and involved making choices I never thought a human heart should be forced to make, and questioning what God might think of me for choosing modern medicine over something this human body is being told isn’t strong enough to survive… but my fiancé has reminded me that my purpose has always been to serve others, and we will continue to do it as a couple this next year, no matter what it takes, and although we may not be able to carry a child of our own, we will give all of our selves to other children who need us. One day, my heart will forgive this awful choice and I will believe I have done everything that I could. One day, I will love others with such a strong and experienced love, I won’t question my reason for existence or the choices I’ve made. All I’ve ever wanted was to be a reflection of His love, and I think that is what heals my breaking heart right now.

Who would have thought that bringing a group of random folks together to hike would be a service. That is what happened! We got to know each other better, exercised our bodies and hearts together. Praised God’s creation together.

    • Dave Pettigrew on March 5, 2020 at 6:20 pm

Melanie, So great to hear. Prayers up for your hikes!

  6. David Deitrich on March 2, 2020 at 2:20 am

Wow that was an amazing devotion here Dave !!
I’ll tell ya I’ve been having a really tough two months …. worries , sickness , financial woes . I’ve been just so busy with my life that I haven’t been really serving the lord as much as I should be . Then I feel that the Lord was talking to me through your devotional video that I watched early this morning .. how you were talking about how many times do we kneel and just pray to our father , how many times do we bring the lord into our daily lives . Well with you saying In that video that we should forget about our worries , our hardships , and our financial woes and start building a relationship with the Lord and start leaning on him to help us through what we’re going through . I’ll tell you … that struck me big time cause I know I was feeling something cause I started crying . So now starting tonight I am going to be praying a lot more to the lord and bringing him into my life a lot more … I’m even going to start going back to Church this Sunday cause I know I need my father in my life !!! Now and Forever !!!! I love what you’re doing for me and everyone else that is your on your list !! Keep up the amazing work you are doing by serving the lord !!! Amen !! 😀🙏❤️

I’m in a rehab recovering from bilateral knee replacement. I had a rough night-lots of pain, painful trips to the bathroom, etc-to be awakened by a nurse who wanted to stick me to draw blood! You served me this morning in a way you could never have known! You reminded me of the Love, Grace, and Mercy of my Lord in every circumstance! I will rejoice in my pain, and I will praise Him for His healing power , and His Church who have been praying for me, visiting me, and serving me. I pray He will use me today to serve someone in some way. Thank you, Dave. Bless you!

  10. Barbara on March 2, 2020 at 12:19 pm

As a traveling medical lab tech I am constantly going to new places and finding a way to serve is often challenging! It’s not hard to find great places to worship but serving is a little more difficult! But I am always looking for ways to serve!

    • Dave Pettigrew on March 5, 2020 at 6:25 pm

Barbara, Thanks for the comment. God will lead you to places to serve for sure. Continued prayers for you!

  11. Kelly on March 2, 2020 at 2:09 pm

I think a small act of service is something as simple as smiling at someone or holding a door open for another. I think we often think acts of service have to be something huge, but really a lot of it is in the small thoughtful things we can do for someone else to let them feel noticed and cared about. Anything that puts the other person before yourself is an act of love and service. So today I will make it a point to make others feel “seen” by God, even if they don’t know Him.

    • Dave Pettigrew on March 5, 2020 at 6:25 pm

Kelly. Agreed! That is such a small way to serve people. Smiles, treating people with integrity and honor and respect. It’s so powerful. Prayers up for you!

Thanks for the note Susan. Yes, we are here to be a Reflection of Him.

  13. Marc Major on April 21, 2020 at 1:45 am

Jesus gave us example after example of servant leadership and if we truly want to live like Jesus, the first order of business for us all to seek out those who we can serve each day. Each day I pray God lead me to the people would want me to share your love with today.

I’m a wife, Mum, Grandmother & sister..I serve my family practically & pray for them. I have a wonderful church family where I would normally attend but it’s all online at present. I cooked up a batch of meals to be donated & left some groceries for our neighbours who are struggling at present. My hubby & I sent letters in the mail to our grandkids & vica versa..An encouraging phone call to friends & the elderly is something I do too..thanks for your devotions..our service is all for God’s glory & to see others won into the Kingdom.

    • Dave Pettigrew on May 14, 2020 at 4:57 pm

Amen Sheryl. Agreed. This type of service is wonderful. Thanks for sharing!

  16. Charlie McTavish on May 24, 2020 at 9:23 pm

Hi Dave what a beautiful song that was. I want to be a reflection of God as well. Read Romans 1:9 and 11 last night and felt a huge conviction in my heart by the Holy Spirit. Paul was telling the Romans how much he prayed for them and as I examined my own heart, I realised that yes I do pray for my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ but not as often as I should do. I really want to change that. Would you mind praying for me please?

    • Dave Pettigrew on May 28, 2020 at 1:13 pm

Charlie, thanks for the kind words. So glad you enjoyed the song. Prayers up for you as you lift others up in prayer.

  17. Norma McNab on July 3, 2020 at 7:22 pm

Once again this devotional and song matches my prayer so well. My prayer is that I make more room for Holy Spirit, in my heart that I may have the heart of God filled with the love of and for Him. That there be more room in my mind that I may have the mind of Christ, filled with His wisdom and more room in my soul that I may be filled with willingness and obedience to serve so that my very life and being reflects Jesus.

my life turned upside down 4 years ago June 10 my husband was invovled in a vehicle vs motorcycle crash ( he was on the motorcycle). he now resides in a nursing facility and now with covid i cannot see him. before covid i was there everyday from lunch to bedtime with with the occasional leaving and coming back making it 2 times in a day. He is unable to care for himself get out of bed, and has difficulty with speech sometimes his words come out jumbled and not what hes trying to say. i have been helping the people with his care when i was there. so life changed again with covid he had do depend on only them to care for him. he has adjusted but he is lonely and sometimes frustrated because he cannot get the words out. i have been praying that the virus does not get into the facility. . and i have prayed that God helps him while i cannot be there. the last few times i have asked him if he wanted me to pray while were on the phone and Praise Jesus he said no but was shaking his head yes so we prayed for god to bless the hands that are taking care of him and to keep them all at the facility safe and out of harms way. I have recently rededicated my life to Christ. I gave my normal life up to sit by husbands side to care for him. I feel its my place as his wife to make sure he is getting the best care i can give and get for him. I’m not sure if this what doing Gods work is but i feel thats where i need to be and unfortunately cant. I’m Trying to figure out what works i can do for Jesus I pray that he helps me to figure this out how i canwork more for him or for the church as volunteering my time. I am also helping to care for my mother-in-law who has gotten up in age. at least until i can care for my husband again. there are so many of the residents in the nursing homes that no family comes to see them and it breaks my heart to see this it really makes thier day for you just to say hi to them or chat for a bit with them. It was scary at first but they are just people like us. they have problems but most of them have the biggest hearts and are so thankful for a kind word. So if you have a chance to volunteer or just stop in to visit with residents in your local facilities when the open back up im sure you will recieve as much of a blessing as u give to them.

Thank you Dave for the Devotion for today and I loved the song you sang. A Reflection of you. Really spoke to my heart of my Born Again Experience and growth of a Christian life. I thank the Lord for you and your love for others Dave. God bless you! I have not really retired yet, and find my hands full of things to do helping my daughter with her three kids is a task, but they al know the Lord. We are in lockdown right now and have been for months. Now I help with all I can even with the Education. I love to worship the Lord in song and is what I try to do daily. There is more I want to do and have been asking the Lord. Please keep me in prayers, ok?
    Thank you!
