7.6.20 – Daily Dose of Worship. 1 John 5;16. Ask.

PRAYER: Please pray for our Monday Night Worship livestream prayer requests.

DEVOTION: “And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.” – ‭‭1 John‬ ‭5:15‬

Ah….so here’s the tough part.

This notion of getting what we ask for. This “promise”. It all comes down to us asking and God giving? Um….not quite.

We “think” we know what we want and need, yet, for some reason God doesn’t always give it to us? Why? We ask, we don’t receive. We plead, we don’t receive. We get frustrated and turn from God. He waits. We realize and confess that maybe, actually, He knows better. We ask again, He still does not respond. Ah, but the lack of response is still a response.

Then we get into trust, faith. More prayer or….less prayer depending on your disposition about the whole situation…..

It’s a tough reality. God knows. He knows what’s best, He’s a loving father, guiding us on our way…..yet, we buck the response or lack of response.

Today. Trust. Have faith. Make your decisions prayerfully.

Maybe you need to take the first step. Maybe you need to take some initiative, it’s not always God pushing, it’s a relationship. A hand in hand walk.

Pray. Ask. Wait. Let God move in His time…..

I’ve prayed for something that has proven to be not good for me. I need to pray as 1 John 5:14 directs… “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”
I need to pray “according to His will.” I’ve known this but, stubbornly and selfishly, asked for what “I” wanted. I’m turning that around and asking for what He wants for me. And I will wait for His answer!!

Every Monday night, my church has prayer. 1 John 5:14-15 is displayed on the big screen. For years, I have stared at, read, and thought about these words. Then….the pandemic. Now, cut off from the comfort of my church, the elders, and the corporate prayer of the people do I truly believe these words?
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” – 1 John 5:14
“And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.” – ‭‭1 John‬ ‭5:15‬

I don’t have access to the original scrolls; even if I did I don’t have the knowledge to know what to do with them…but…I have the Holy Spirit, and a desire to have a personal relationship with God. This desire, my experiences, and faith do make me confident…I know that I can approach God…on my own…just me.
‘ask anything according to his will’…my focus is ‘his will’… Jesus is my example, he was only about his father’s will (John 6:38). God’s will is his word. Faith comes by hearing his word Romans 10:7) Psalm 57:2 and Romans 8:28 say that God will work all things for good and for his purpose. In surrendering my own will, I am asking God into my life…into my need. I know he hears me…there is so much scripture that says he does…that plus my own experiences of seeing God move makes me believe.

In submission I give God the ability to work in my life…my will is no longer my own but God’s will for me. the desires I ask for, become the things God wants for me…he will honor my requests…in his time…in his way. I’m good with that.

I will pray for a hedge of protection around my home during a storm, or around us and our car if we are traveling but not consistently …until… the pandemic. Every morning my husband, Dave, and I pray before he leaves the house…no plague shall come upon my dwelling…hedge of protection around Dave so that no harm can come near him or his car…these prayers are now said daily. Yesterday, Dave came back home 10 minutes after he had left, he had forgotten his phone. Last night, he told me he then got stuck in traffic caused by an accident. Had God worked it out so Dave wasn’t involved in that accident? I don’t know for sure but I gave God the praise for it.

I like to think that God orchestrates that sort of thing all the time. Sometimes we are so busy we don’t see what has happened. Other times there is not doubt! I was stationed in Frankfurt in the 70’s when the Baader-Meinhof gang was very active. I was a driver for for a data processing company in the the Abrams building. One morning I stopped to pick another soldier up that was going there. If I had not stopped I would have been passing the bank in the Abrams building when a bomb went off that was put there by that gang! Devine intervention? I like to think so!

I think when we ask Him for things we should always ask it in accordance with his will because he knows best. Once asked we need to wait and listen for what is next! It’s the waiting and listening that is so hard. And sometimes it’s really hard to not be a little upset when things don’t go the direction I want…just like a petulant child! It’s usually about this time in my assignments that I start thinking about, praying about the next thing. I would like nothing better than to just retire and be done with work but I don’t have a clear peace about that and I definitely don’t know where I will live when I retire. It kind of looks like an opportunity is opening for a contract job doing correlations for a reference lab. I would love that and at one time was a dream job for me…it never worked out and now my dream job is no job! I will likely not like the location but it would not be the first time I did that! I mean I went to Alaska and Montana and I hate winter! At His urging I not only went to Montana but went back twice! What’s next? Only God knows! He’s not telling right now….so I wait and work on things like my health so I am ready when His next thing for me happens! I am not good at waiting but studying 1John has been a growth experience for sure!

I have loved this study also. Barbara, I want to go to lunch with you, I think we could share some pretty amazing stories with each other. Well, we might need longer than a lunch….want to go back to Alaska? Going on an Alaskan cruise is one of my dreams.
