PRAYER: Please pray for your relationship with Jesus. That it would grow, not grow stagnant, but grow in excitement and passion.
DEVOTION: Here’s a quote:
“Oh Jesus, let it come to pass that we never do anything in our own strength. Let all that we do be done to the glory of the Lord.”
That’s the last sentence of this section that we were discussing last night. Pretty beautiful sentiment.
Then he turns to John 7:37-39. This was the story of Jesus stating to the people, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Interesting point here about the Spirit not yet given as Jesus was not yet glorified. This was all taking place while Jesus was here on Earth. He was healing the blind, preaching the good news. All of this was leading up to His death and resurrection. Yet, in the midst of all of this, as Smith points out, Jesus knew when the people were about to starve to death and He supplied their needs.
A huge point that’s made here is that in all of this Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit. No one else knew anything about it or what it meant but Jesus was filled with the Spirit. He was full of the divine inflow of life of God.
What a sentence. He was full of the divine inflow of life of God. Absolutely amazing to think about isn’t it. Jesus, God’s son, had the Spirit of God living in Him and no one else knew about this. This Spirit led Him to do things like giving hope and providing for people’s needs. Loving people, caring for people, being there when people needed Him. All of the things that we strive for as Christians, Jesus was the living example of it as He walked among us.
Why? Because the Spirit was living inside of Him.
Just like the Spirit is living inside us. We can continue to strive for and achieve all of this because the Spirit of God who fills us with the divine inflow of life from God is available to us every day.
Read those last few sentences again and pray on that. Pray that God’s Spirit and life would fill us with all of the traits of Jesus.
