7.10.20 – Daily Dose of Worship. 1 John 5:21. Idols.

PRAYER: Please pray for our community tonight. Thankful for each one of you.

DEVOTION: “Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.” – ‭‭1 John‬ ‭5:21

Some translations say to keep away from idols. This is how John ends the chapter. This is how he ends this book. With this final nugget of incredibly powerful and plainly simple piece of wisdom.

Guard your heart. Don’t let anything that might take the place of God into your hearts….

Let’s see, the list is extensive. It’s downright enormous. How many can you list off the top of your head? So many things are craving our attention….

But….we are better off with God being the focus and the ruler of our hearts. Let everything else fall in line after that but the utmost of importance is that we keep God first in it all. Always.

Simple? No. We encounter major opposition to this idea. The world does not let us believe this for one second, it’s too busy trying to feed us it’s own agendas.

But…we know better. We are given the Spirit who helps and guides us. Who gives us wisdom and instruction. We are given Jesus.

Today. Keep your hearts from anything that is not of God. Let Him and only Him rule your heart and your life.

Prayers up for all of us today as we continue to seek Him in it all.

This year, I chose the word AWARE to be my focus word. I asked to be made more aware and God has been showing me a lot. I was shown that even seemingly harmless things become idols. …. from hobbies to grudges…whatever takes my focus is an idol. Not that I can’t have hobbies but Jesus first. …I was spending too much time and money on hobbies. …it was the dominant part of my day. God is teaching me that he is my priority and how to appropriate everything in proper measure. For example…money is not the root of all evil ( a common cliche) but the ‘love’ of money is the root…how much time spent worrying about money…time planning on how to get it…risks taken or schemes ventured to get it…we go in the direction of our most dominant thought…God wants to be that thought….

One of my favorites is proverbs 23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. So thank you for this today. May God Bless you.
