So, yesterday we were talking about John and how he was calling people out. It gets a little more intense today. Check this out.
In Matthew 3, Matthew talks about John baptizing people by the Jordan river. Folks were coming down and confessing their sins and getting dunked in the water. So the wealthy elite of the Jewish society and many fo the religious leaders known as the Pharisees start to make their way down to the river to be baptized and here’s John’s response:
“You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to slither away like snakes from the fire of God’s judgement? You must prove your repentance by a changed life. And don’t presume you can get away with merely saying to yourselves, ‘But we’re Abraham’s descendants! For I tell you, God can awaken these stones to become sons of Abraham!
He continues on but you get the point…pretty harsh!
Interesting notes to look at here.
The word viper in the Aramaic is akidneh, which is really in reference to a scorpion. When a male scorpion mates it quickly dies. The mother scorpion dies when giving birth, so every scorpion is born into this world as an orphan without the guidance of a set of parents. The dual meaning is simply this: The Pharisees were indeed cunning as vipers, but they also were spiritual orphans. John implied in using the word akidneh that Abraham died giving them birth and they have lost their guidance. But if the Pharisees would only turn to their true loving Father, they would no longer be orphans.
Turn to their loving Father. Words that we should all heed.
Prayers up for you today as you continue to turn to God in the midst of all going on in your life. Keep him involved in it all. Surrender it to Him.
