12.18.20 – Daily Dose of Worship. A study on prayer. Part 33. Confess.

DEVOTION: “It is not for me to decide whether you should confess your sins to a priest or not (our Prayer Book leaves that free to all and demands it of none) but if you do not, you should at least make a list on a piece of paper, and make a serious act of penance about each one of them. There is something about the mere words, you know, provided you avoid two dangers, either of sensational exaggeration—trying to work things up and make melodramatic sins out of small matters—or the opposite danger of slurring things over.” (Pg 60)

Ok. Really good stuff here.

Anyone keep a prayer journal? A list of prayers that have or haven’t been answered? A list of prayers for sins committed? Sins that you know of?

It’s an interesting thought. To keep a record of sins. It is a kind of confession when you write it down. You’re confessing to yourself. Confessing at least sins you remember. So many are completely unknown to the conscious mind.

I do like this idea though.

What would that look like in your life? Are you willing to try this?

I might be. A running list of the things to pray for. A running list of confessions….not sure that’s ever a book I’d want anyone else to read.

Anyway, just a thought. Maybe something to implement in your daily walk.

I posted this suggestion to one of our MNW family members, I do it myself…

2 Corinthians 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.
Liz, you are a creative person, because of that you need to do (tangible learning) as well as see (visual learning) the lesson to help it sink in and cement itself into your soul. Soooo here is my suggestion. Take a big envelope…label it TRUTH..every time you have a bad thought, write it on a slip of paper and put it in the envelope..then take another slip of paper and write the Biblical truth and hang it on your fridge or the bathroom mirror..wherever you will see it often…keep doing it..write it read it say it

Truth covers lies…seal the envelope, make a slit to put the paper through…don’t open the envelope don’t read the lies. Read the scriptures…read the truth…the truth will set you free. Keep doing this even, if you don’t believe the truth yet. You will. We learn by repetition. If only we could realize how many negative thoughts we speak over ourselves…squash ’em…like a bug and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”John 8:32 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. Luke 10:19

    works for confessions too
