11.26.20 – Daily Dose of Worship. A study on prayer. Part 12. Involved.

DEVOTION: “God,” said Pascal, “instituted prayer in order to lend to His creatures the dignity of causality.” But not only prayer; whenever we act at all He lends us that dignity. It is not really stranger, nor less strange, that my prayers should affect the course of events than that my other actions should do so. They have not advised or changed God’s mind – that is, His overall purpose. But that purpose will be realized in different ways according to the actions, including the prayers of His creatures.” (pg 11)

cau·sal·i·ty/kôˈzalədē/noun

  1. the relationship between cause and effect.
  2. the principle that everything has a cause

Our prayers, just like other actions that take place over the course of the day create opportunity, create events, create direction. Why should we be surprised or not surprised when they do or don’t create an effect?

It’s an interesting way of looking at it. One that I had never thought of before.

The statement above where Lewis says that our prayers affect the course of events just like my other actions affect the course of my events. It doesn’t however change God’s mind or His purpose. Yet, that purpose is realized in different ways according to our actions. One of those actions being prayer.

My brain hurts.

Yet…the point is valid. Our actions help determine whether our prayers are answered or not. OK. So what is he saying, that we actually have to work hand in hand with God to see our prayers answered?

Wait….I have to be involved? It’s not God working just for me?

Whew! That one was deep . We have to be so intimately devoted to Jesus and lean on His understanding and He will make our paths straight. He will give us the desires of our heart as long as they’re in line with His will . Thank you Jesus for ALL you do for us and in us.

    Jeremiah 33:3
Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.

Let’s look at it like this …NOT praying, NOT being involved will cause hidden things to NOT be revealed. I am NOT choosing that action

If we align our hearts with his, he will work miracles. Be silent from time to time and listen to him and his guidance. Then pray fervently; in the good and the bad times. Blessings and Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

I understand why it makes your head hurt Dave! I had to read it several times! It’s a lot to think about and act upon.
