DEVOTION: “The new life of God is not just on the surface. It builds the character of a person in purity until his inward heart is filled with divine love and has nothing but thoughts of God alone. “That you may be perfect and complete and lacking nothing.” (Pg 194)
“Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” – James 1:4
Mature and complete. Only having thoughts of God.
Seems like an impossibility doesn’t it. Seems like something that I might not actually, totally want. Only thoughts of God. But I like thinking about my wife, about my life, about all that is going on. I like comic books and pizza.
Not sure that’s totally what Smith is talking about here. I think it’s more about the overarching aspect of letting God into every single aspect of your life. Letting Him rule and reign over it all.
I heard a quote this morning that I really liked. It’s by the billionaire investor Warren Buffet.
“Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.”
It’s a good quote. We talk about habits often here. We talk about how we need to let God into all of our habits and all of our routines. So as we think about “not lacking anything” and “being mature and complete”, we need to be sure to let God into the equation and the situation. We need to speak about our habits and routines and about how they sometimes don’t gel with the way that God fits into our lives….that’s what needs to be changed and modified.
We need to welcome God into the routine. Maybe welcome Him into the destruction of the destructive habits. Maybe….
PRAYER: Pray today about your habits. That God would infiltrate all of them.
