DEVOTION: Here’s something that I actually never thought of before about prayer. Check out this quote:
“In Gethsemane, the holiest of all petitioners prayed three times that a certain cup might pass from Him. It did not. After that the idea that prayer is recommended to us as a sort of infallible gimmick may be dismissed.” (pg 4)
I have never thought about Jesus’ unanswered prayers. He did pray three times. We’ve all read it in the story of the Bible about the crucifixion. Yet, even Jesus’ prayers weren’t answered.
So where does that leave us. If Jesus’ prayers are left hanging, how many of ours are left hanging? But…the difference? Look at the outcome of what happened the next day, Jesus was crucified, tortured, died and was buried. Pretty incredible outcome for an unanswered prayer….and yet…..three days later, He rises again. Overcoming, sin, death, despair…all of it.
If Jesus’ prayer had been answered, would we be living in the freedom that we live in now? Would our sins be forgiven? Would our hearts be made clean? The straight answer….no.
So. God has a larger plan in everything. He sees beyond our own thoughts, desires, intentions and egos. He sees beyond it all.
We’ll dig more into this I’m sure but think about the unanswered prayers. Think about how the outcome would have been different if the prayer had been answered.
PRAYER: Maybe take a minute and thank God for unanswered prayers.
