10.3.20 – Daily Dose of Worship. A study on the Holy Spirit. Part 84. Die?

DEVOTION: “…to master the situation of myself. You are not going to oppose devils if you cannot master yourself, because you will soon find the devils to be bigger than yourself. It is only when you are conquered by Christ that He is enthroned. Then the embodiment of the Spirit gloriously covers your life so that Jesus is glorified to the full. So first, it is the losing of ourselves…. (pg129)

The losing of ourselves.

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. – Galatians 2:20

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. – Luke 9:23

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self[a] was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free[b] from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. – Romans 6:1-11

I know. Lots of verses here but the idea of dying to yourself is such a crucial point that Jesus makes so often and that Paul reiterates many times.

How do we do this? At the moment of salvation the old person we once were dies and we become a new creation. The desires of the sinful man are still with us but we need to deny them and become one with Christ. One with the Holy Spirit in us. The person we were before our salvation didn’t want to live for anyone but him or herself. The new creation wants to live for Christ.

Today. Re-read those verses. Think on your daily walk, your journey. How are you dying to self today? How are you denying the temptations and leaning more on Jesus to get you through the day?

PRAYER: Pray today for strength in your walk. Strength in your daily denial of all that the world throws at you.

Thank you for this. Let us die more of ourselves and new reborn into God’s loving arms. For he knows us fully. Rest in his glory.
